Spring is upon us, and somehow there are only a couple of months left in the season. There’s still time to get some last minute skiing and riding in, though, in what might be the best time of the year if you’re strapped for cash but still want to have a good time. So, what makes spring the best time to ski in Colorado?

It’s cheaper: Many resorts offer discounted lift tickets late in the season, and there are tons of deals floating around if you know where to find them. After the Spring Breakers leave, lodging fares pretty much plummet too.

The weather’s better: Though spring weather can be unpredictable in Colorado, the odds of the sun being out are pretty high. Summit County’s average April temp lies at a balmy 48 degrees Fahrenheit; it can be really fun to ski in a T-shirt.

Best Places for Late Season Skiing:

Telluride: With extended spring hours and exciting events happening every weekend until closing day, Telluride is ideal for a spring break excursion. You can even ski in a bikini, if you’re into that sort of thing, at the annual Bikini Slalom on March 29th.

Breckenridge: Arguably one of the best times to ski at Breck is during the month-long festival Breck Spring Fever, the “largest spring party” in the Rockies. This year the festival begins March 22nd and ends closing day, April 20th. Breck also has prime spring snow conditions, so it’s really a win-win spring skiing destination.

Copper Mountain: Not only does Copper have some awesome events scheduled this spring, it also is participating in Shell™ Gas Station’s Ski Free promotion. You can use that saved cash to buy a pass to Copper Mountain events like the Color Run or the Eenie Weenie Bikini Contest.

Wolf Creek: Wolf Creek consistently boasts the most snow per year in Colorado, making it one of the most popular late season destinations. A great family ski area, Wolf Creek hosts weekly “Fun Races”, open to skiers and boarders of all ages and ability levels.

Arapahoe Basin: Snow at A-Basin is often hailed as the best spring snow in Colorado, due in part to the resort having the highest elevation of any skiable terrain in North America. A Basin also stays open until June, later than almost any other North American resort, which translates into more great spring skiing for you.

So, grab your gear, pick a place, and go ride before the season’s over!
